Enriching Our Heritage: Combating Antisemitism with Education and Awareness

This Guest Post was in the news written by our CEO Iris Hami.

In the wake of the tragic events of October 7th in Israel, there has been a disturbing rise in antisemitic incidents across the United States. This surge in hatred serves as a stark reminder of the importance of educating our Jewish children and grandchildren about their heritage and equipping them to stand against antisemitism. One of the most powerful ways to do this is through a Jewish heritage tour to Berlin, a city where the Holocaust was meticulously planned and executed. Such a tour provides a unique opportunity to understand the roots of antisemitism and learn how to combat it effectively in today’s world.

Grassroots Movements: The Power of Community Resilience

The Berlin Jewish community contains some really talented and altruistic people, and there’s a passion for initiatives to strengthen both the community and the city as a whole. The famous Jewish Museum of Berlin has operated a mobile outreach program to the city’s schools since 2007, helping educators to improve kids’ awareness of the Shoah and antisemitism. The provocatively entitled “Rent-a-Jew” service pioneered the idea of sending volunteer speakers to schools to give children insights into Jewish life.

Berlin is already a member of the international “Mayors United Against Anti-Semitism” organization, and the city authorities are backing new initiatives to promote dialogue. The Central Council for Jews in Germany is continuing with its “Schalom Aleikum” initiative to promote understanding between different religious communities.

Understanding Antisemitism Through History

Berlin, a city with a complex Jewish history, offers an unparalleled educational experience. The Jewish community in Berlin was once at the forefront of the Haskalah, the Jewish Enlightenment, contributing to a vibrant cultural heritage that is still celebrated today. However, Berlin was also the administrative heart of the Nazi regime, where the horrors of the Holocaust were orchestrated. By 1945, the once-thriving Jewish community had been decimated, with only a fraction of its members surviving the Holocaust.

For young Jews growing up in the United States today, understanding this history is crucial. The lessons learned from Berlin’s past can provide them with the knowledge and resilience needed to face antisemitism, whether it arises on college campuses or within their local communities.

Cultural Renaissance: Celebrating Jewish Heritage in Berlin

Perhaps the best long-term defense against antisemitism is community pride and cultural celebration. The Berlin Jewish community has pressed ahead with an ambitious program of cultural events in 2024.

Travel Safety and Cultural Opportunities for Jewish Visitors

Berlin is (arguably) Europe’s top destination for arts and culture. It really pays to plan your tour with an experienced Jewish travel company like Gil Travel. Not only can you draw on their inside knowledge to create a unique cultural travel itinerary, but you can do it in style with a choice of Kosher luxury hotels and the city’s best Kosher Jewish food venues.

Gil Travel will adapt your program to the season of the year (Berlin can be cold in winter) and arrange walking tours, lectures, meetings with the Jewish community, private tours of museums and galleries, and help you to achieve the right balance between visits to Holocaust memorials and exhibitions, and more cheerful events, including tours of Berlin’s wonderful parks and forests.

Jewish travelers are naturally concerned about their personal safety and security, but Berlin is generally safe for tourists. Gil Travel uses its local contacts to conduct ongoing risk assessments for every country and city where it operates tours. We provide trained and vetted tour guides and can increase security measures as needed.

Overall, Berlin is a wonderful city to visit, and the Berlin Jewish community is keen to welcome American Jews. It’s a difficult time for Jews, and it’s important to show solidarity and forge new links between communities across the diaspora. Gil Travel is very happy to make the initial introductions when you fly to Berlin!
