OVERVIEW
Majorca is one of Spain’s Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean well known for its beach resorts, sheltered coves, limestone mountains, Roman and Moorish remains and nightlife. But did you know that the Spanish island of Mallorca was also home for hundreds of years to a thriving Jewish community where Jews played a pivotal role in cartography before having to go underground with the rise of the Spanish Inquisition in the 14th and 15th centuries. Many Jews faced forced conversions, becoming Crypto-Jews, who displayed their Catholic face outwardly while adhering to their Jewish faith through secret signs and hidden synagogues in their homes.
Take a Jewish Heritage tour of Spain and Majorca – walk through the narrow, winding streets and uncover signs of this secret Jewish community and learn the secret traditions the Jews created to keep their faith close. Majorca is a good idea for Jewish group travel – either as a stand alone or as a pre or post to other places in Spain.
