OVERVIEW

This five-day immersive journey centers on exploring the Jewish community and cultural tapestry of La Paz, Bolivia  and its immediate surroundings. It offers a unique blend of historical discovery, community connection, and cultural immersion, all within the context of the world’s highest administrative capital. Participants will gain firsthand insights into the history of Jewish immigration to Bolivia, particularly the experiences of World War II refugees, through direct interaction with community members, visits to the synagogue and community center, and discussions with elders.  

The itinerary balances community engagement with Walking tours in La Paz, historical landmarks, cultural institutions like the National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore, and the stunning panoramic views from El Alto. A day trip to a nearby area of cultural or historical significance provides a glimpse of the Altiplano, while returning each evening to La Paz allows for deeper reflection and connection with the community. This trip is designed to foster a profound understanding of the Jewish community’s role within La Paz and a rich appreciation for the city’s unique Andean and Jewish cultural fusion.

Day 1: Arrival and Community Introduction

After arriving at El Alto International Airport (LPB) and transferring to your La Paz hotel, an introductory meeting will be held with a representative of the La Paz Jewish community, providing an overview of their history, current activities, and the week’s planned interactions. The evening culminates in a welcome dinner with community members, fostering informal conversation and building connections.

Day 2: La Paz Historical and Cultural Immersion

A guided tour of the historic center of La Paz, including Plaza Murillo, the Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace, will begin the day, emphasizing the city’s historical context and its impact on the Jewish community. The afternoon features a visit to the National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore, providing a broader understanding of Bolivian culture. Later, a visit to the Synagogue and Community Center will explore its architecture, history, and current role within the community. The evening allows for free time to explore local markets and restaurants or an optional informal gathering with community members.

Day 3: El Alto and Panoramic Views

The day begins with an ascent to El Alto via the iconic cable car system, offering exploration of vibrant markets and panoramic views of La Paz and the surrounding Andes. A visit to a local artisan workshop or market, focusing on traditional crafts and their cultural significance, follows. Day 4: Surrounding Areas Exploration and Reflection
