OVERVIEW
Explore the rich past of the Jewish community of Hungary on a Jewish heritage tour of Budapest.
Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, has a rich Jewish history spanning over 200 years. Despite the horrors of the Holocaust and the erasure of many Jewish landmarks during the communist era, Budapest’s Jewish community has managed to survive and thrive. They are one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe, and a Jewish heritage tour of Budapest is one of the best ways to meet them.
Today, Budapest offers a plethora of Jewish tours that showcase the city’s Jewish heritage and culture.
Visit the Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe, and the Holocaust Memorial Center, which commemorates the Hungarian Holocaust victims.
The tour also includes stops at the Kazinczy Street Synagogue, a beautiful Art Nouveau building with unique paintings and patterns decorating the interior, and the Jewish Quarter, where visitors can sample Jewish cuisine and visit shops selling Jewish art and literature.
The Jewish Historical Museum, a must-visit destination, houses a vast collection of Jewish artifacts, including ritual objects, manuscripts, and documents, and provides visitors with a comprehensive overview of the city’s Jewish heritage.
Overall, Jewish tours in Budapest offer a unique opportunity to explore the city’s rich Jewish history and culture, and to gain a deeper understanding of the Jewish experience in Hungary.

Danube in memory of the Jews who were massacred by Fascist Hungarian militia.
After a short memorial ceremony at the shoe memorial, tour the Parliament,
the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary.
See the Memorial for Victims of the German Occupation located in Liberty Square, a
memorial that has sparked controversy and angered Jewish community organizations throughout the world.
Walk to the larger than life (literally!) statues of former US President’s Ronald Regan
and George Bush in the heart of Budapest. End the morning nearby at the Raul Wallenberg Memorial.
Lunch at a local restaurant.
After lunch, visit the Hero’s Square – one of the major squares in Budapest noted for its iconic Millennium Monument with statues featuring the chieftains of the Magyars. Hear the stories of these seven historic leaders.
After you can choose one of two choices:
Option One: Szentendre is a Hungarian town on the Danube River about 45 minutes
north of Budapest. It’s known for its baroque architecture, colourful houses and narrow,
cobbled streets. The main square, Fő Tér, and the alleyways around it are lined with art
galleries, museums and shops. A wonderful little town to explore and of course SHOP.
Option Two: Etyek is one of the 22 wine regions of Hungary about 30 minutes outside of
Budapest. We would meet with the Viner, enjoy a wine and cheese tasting experience
(not kosher) in a unique atmosphere.
